Introduction / History

The Pondoma people live in Madang Province in Papua New Guinea, in the Josephstaal area of villages. Their communities are part of a broader Madang landscape where rugged terrain, heavy rainfall, and thick vegetation often make travel slow and keep communities relatively isolated from major services and markets. Because Papua New Guinea is linguistically diverse places, Pondoma people's identity has been preserved not only through land and kinship, but also through language. The Pondoma speak the Anam language.

Over time, the Pondoma have experienced increasing contact with outside influences through churches, government systems, and periodic development efforts. These connections can bring education and health support, while also introducing new social expectations and economic pressures that require careful community adaptation.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Pondoma life centers on extended family relationships, with households linked through networks of relatives who share labor, exchange goods, and support one another during sickness or crisis. Elders hold authority as keepers of land knowledge, family obligations, and customary ways of resolving disputes. Children learn practical skills by participating in daily work and are shaped by community expectations of respect, reciprocity, and responsibility.

Livelihoods are sustained primarily through subsistence gardening and local food production, with families relying on their gardens for daily meals and seasonal stability. Forest resources, hunting, and fishing supplement their diet when available. Cash opportunities are limited and often depend on transport, market access, and wage labor. Money is important for school fees, tools, clothing, and medical costs, but the community's wellbeing still rests heavily on cooperation and shared work rather than steady salaries.

Community life is highly participatory. Major events such as marriages, funerals, conflict resolution, and shared work projects require collective effort and careful social coordination. Public gatherings, including celebrations and festivals, often feature singing, dancing, and cultural expression that reinforce identity and unity. Church events and Christian calendar celebrations are also key times for worship and renewing social bonds.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Pondoma are primarily Christian, with a significant Roman Catholicism presence. Church life shapes community rhythms through worship services, prayers, and moral teaching, and also serves as a framework for mutual support when families face hardship. For many people, the church is not merely a weekly activity; it can be a central place for counsel, community decisions, and shared hope.

At the same time, traditional or animistic beliefs remain significant. Many people interpret misfortune, illness, or conflict through the lens of unseen powers, spiritual causes, or inherited obligations. These beliefs are sincere expressions of faith in spiritual systems that promise protection or explanation, especially in an environment where life is uncertain and resources are limited.

The deepest spiritual need for the Pondoma is that faith would be anchored wholly in Jesus Christ, trusting his mercy for forgiveness and freedom. Christ alone has authority over every fear and spiritual claim, and the gospel calls people to live not under bondage to hidden powers, but in the peace and assurance that come from belonging to Him.

What Are Their Needs?

The Pondoma need ongoing biblical teaching and discipleship that strengthens personal faith and builds mature believers who can lead others. Even where Christian identity is strong, challenges such as spiritual shallowness, syncretism, or lack of confident understanding of Scripture may persist. The community would benefit from trained local leaders, accessible Christian resources in the Anam language, and consistent mentoring that equips families to follow Christ in daily life.

Pondoma villages face challenges including limited access to healthcare, preventable diseases, maternal and child health concerns, and difficulties obtaining medicines. Clean water and sanitation are ongoing vulnerabilities, affecting health and daily workload, especially for women and children. Education is constrained by distance, staffing, and funding, while economic pressures intensify when cash is needed for school fees, transport, or emergencies. Communities also experience stress from conflict, breakdown of traditional dispute-resolution mechanisms, and social changes as young people return from school or work with new expectations.

These needs call for compassionate action that honors human dignity, while recognizing that lasting hope and transformation flow from the mercy of Jesus Christ, shaping communities into places of truth, peace, and sacrificial love.

Prayer Items

Pray that the Lord would lead the Pondoma people into deep, joyful trust in Jesus Christ and His mercy, with strong church leadership that teaches Scripture clearly.
Pray that the Lord would provide improved healthcare access, protection from preventable diseases, and timely help for families facing medical emergencies; pray also that He would provide them with sustainable livelihoods, fruitful gardens, and opportunities for income.
Pray that the Lord would draw the Pondoma people in eagerly seeking to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with people groups with less access to discipleship and Scriptures.
Pray that the Lord would provide the translation and availability of Scripture and Christian teaching materials in the Anam language, and for effective ministry resources to support discipleship and church growth.
